Safety day proves a great success

This year’s McNicholas Construction Services’ Annual Safety Day at Industry Training Services was a great success.
Cormac O’Donnell, Head of Operations at McNicholas Construction Services, said it was their best ever safety day and they are already looking forward to next year.

The day, which is a first for this new concept in Northern Ireland, was held on June 6. The event catered for 200-plus employees and consisted of inspirational presentations, demonstrations, engaging activities around health and safety and team building activities, as well as breakfast and lunch. The aim of the event was to increase the emphasis in reducing potential unsafe acts by highlighting potential risks and ensuring everyone works safely together. Topics included:

  • Safety in Excavations – Candidates got involved in inspections of various types of trench shoring.
  • Environment & Wellbeing – Candidates got involved in measuring noise levels of commonly used equipment as well as a practical demonstration of following environmental procedures whilst pumping dirty water.
  • Banksman & Safe Digging – Candidates witnessed company method statements being followed during excavation around a gas main.

Other activities included Zorb football, a digger challenge, archery and a climbing wall. Prizes were awarded for best time climbing the wall, best time completing the digger challenge and best safety suggestion.

Cormac added, “We are delighted that our Safety Day at ITS was such a huge success. We were able to get our key operational safety messages across to our operatives in a practical manner and when combined with a mix of fun activities the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all concerned. This is a new concept in delivering our safety message and we are very much looking forward to next year’s event at ITS.”

McNicholas is committed to the ongoing health and well-being of all the company’s staff, which is clearly evident from this fantastic event.

Brendan Crealey, Managing Director at ITS, said, “We are delighted to have the facilities and resources that our new centre provides to bring this event to fruition for McNicholas. The day proved to be so popular that McNicholas will be returning next year for their annual safety day once again.”

Industry Training Services wish McNicholas Construction Services good luck in the Utility Week Stars Awards in which the Safety Day at ITS has been shortlisted for the Health and Safety Champion – Initiative Award
