Antrim-based specialist flat roofing firm GBS Roofing has completed an extensive £700,000 roofing project at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex, Lisburn.
Working directly with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, GBS Roofing replaced five flat roofs, installed new rooflights, fall protection and anchor systems and safety stairs, as well as an innovative bird protection solution.
Lagan Valley LeisurePlex is one of the council’s regional recreational and sporting facilities. It has undergone significant reinvestment and refurbishment since opening in 2000.
Barry Mairs, Managing Director, GBS Roofing, said, “Lagan Valley LeisurePlex is a popular leisure attraction for people across Northern Ireland, and GBS Roofing was delighted to work with Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council to ensure the waterproofing integrity of this important community facility.
“Not only were several areas of flat roofing and rooflights over the main building in need of full replacement, GBS Roofing was required to source and install wider roofing systems, such as lightning protection, fall prevention and anchor supports. These include essential safety measures used by a range of maintenance workers who require roof access, such as air conditioning technicians and abseil window cleaners.
“In addition, GBS Roofing designed and installed a bird protection system that allows rooflights to be fully opened for ventilation but prevents seagulls and other large nesting birds from entering and damaging the building.
“In completing the project, GBS Roofing utilised a range of the most advanced flat roofing products and sourced the majority of materials from local suppliers where possible.”
Sika worked closely with the client’s design team to propose a suitable specification to address this complex refurbishment project. This multi roof refurbishment project employed Sika’s Sikalastic liquid applied membrane products as well as Sika’s single ply membrane systems – all expertly applied by GBS Roofing. GBS Roofing installed all Sika waterproofing systems to the highest possible standards with Sika regularly inspecting the works to ensure the highest standards were maintained.
Brett Martin Daylight Systems supplied over 220m of Bespoke Marvault Rooflights to GBS Roofing as part of their roof refurbishment package. Brett Martin was heavily involved with GBS Roofing, the council and their design team to put together a solution that reduced solar gain and glare within the playing area. The client opted for a double skin of structured polycarbonate including a number of opening vents to control the internal conditions with an automatic link to the building’s management system.
Relinea supplied glass reinforced anti-slip steps, staircases and platforms, while Skyway supplied edge protection and man anchors. Another main supplier was Balloo Hire who provided site support and safety access equipment.
