Offsite manufacturers are shaving 70% off traditional construction timeframes by making prefabricated building components (façade, wet rooms, plant rooms etc) in factories with a minimum amount of onsite work. Sika’s signposted modular construction product solutions are directly supporting this faster offsite construction method.

The specialty chemicals company with a leading position in the development and production of systems and products for bonding, sealing, damping, reinforcing, and protecting in the building sector and motor vehicle industry has singled out selected products that are suitable for three areas of offsite application: exterior, interior and wet room. Products include general sealing and bonding (silicones and polyurethane adhesives), concrete admixtures for prefabricated and precast concrete components, tile sealers, grouts and waterproofing systems, cementious products and roofing membranes for exterior applications.

“Sika can supply everything from standard construction variants to more advanced time-saving adhesive solutions applied by pumps and robots,” said David Fitzpatrick, Target Market Manager – Sealing and Bonding.

“The major benefit of our adhesive products is their fast securing properties, which eliminates the need for nails and therefore the need to secondary fill nail holes. Our time-saving products can be applied manually or by robots, depending on the client’s process.”

Since the first Covid-19 lockdown, Sika has witnessed an increase in demand for their products in parallel with the growth of offsite construction in Ireland.

“We’ve identified a number of potential, well-established customers but we’ve also seen a lot of new companies come to the market. We’ve been involved in several offsite projects from converting steel containers into offices to modular school buildings and Covid-19 pod testing units to garden offices for remote workers.

“Offsite construction has taken off during the past 12 months, and we predict it will continue to grow thanks to it’s time- and labour-saving benefits.”
